Looking for some simple home hacks to make life easier? At Halton we understand the importance of feeling independent in your own home. We’ve put together a bunch of techniques, or home ‘hacks’ for older people that you or a loved one can adopt to help manage your time and daily activities in a more efficient way.

As we get older, it’s common to experience reduced mobility and occasionally feel like our memories aren’t as sharp as they once were. While these things are only natural factors of ageing, they can make everyday activities more difficult. If you want to make life’s everyday frustrations or struggles a little easier, try utilizing these clever methods you might not have thought of before.

Safety proof your space
When it comes to being comfortable in your home, safety is an important factor. If our mobility starts to change and we’re more unsteady on our feet, then everyday things like steps and rugs can suddenly become dangerous potential trip hazards. A simple tips is to add grips or non-stick mats underneath your rugs and mats. This way they’ll stay firm to the ground, eliminating the chance of any slipping or tripping.

Finding it difficult to balance sometimes? Then consider modifications to your home such as adding extra handrails or having a stairlift installed for steep steps. You can read more about home adaptations here.

Make better use of technology
Are you making the most out of devices like laptops, tablets, or your mobile phone for everyday tasks? Try using voice recordings to set yourself simple reminders. Whether you need to remember important appointments, or a quick prompt to take medication at certain times, setting yourself a voice note can help.

If typing out long texts or emails sometimes feel like a chore, try using a speech-to-text app like Speech Notes. Simply dictate what you want to say and the app will turn your speech into text, automatically. This is particularly helpful if you’re having eyesight problems or dealing with limited dexterity.

Ever left the supermarket only to forget where you’ve parked your car? Try taking a photo of the area you’re parked in to refer back to later. You can also use your camera to take snaps of the inside of your fridge or cupboard before you set off for your weekly shopping trip. This way you can quickly remind yourself of what’s missing so you won’t forget to pick up any vital ingredients.

They say a tidy home is a tidy mind. When things are messy in the space around you, it can cause us to be less organized and can add to stress, not to mention that unnecessary clutter is a big trip hazard. Try to keep things neat and organized where possible. A helpful hack is to add labels to boxes and jars for better visibility – this can work in every room.

We hope you’ve enjoyed reading about these home hacks for older people, and find them useful. If you have any home hacks of your own, let us know.
