Have you ever wondered, how are stairlifts powered? Here we take a look at how stairlifts work. As well as how they are powered to make so many journeys up and down the stairs each year.

By understanding how stairlifts are powered, you can make sure you have everything in place before you have your stairlift installed.

How Are Stairlifts Powered?

To help you get up and down the stairs, your stairlift needs to move along a track that runs the length of your staircase. To move along the track, it’s powered by a small motor. This motor runs on a low voltage charge which comes from a stairlift battery housed in the base of the chair.

Do Stairlifts Need a Power Supply or Do They Run Off a Battery?

When the stairlift is at a stand-still, it sits in a charging station. This is connected to the DC mains power supply via the stairlift rail. During its downtime, the stairlift battery is slowly recharged so that it’s ready to go again when it’s needed.

If there is a power cut, your stairlift battery still holds enough charge to make a few essential trips up and down the stairs. And should last until the power comes back on or you make other arrangements.

You can check the stairlift electrical requirements needed for stairlift installation. Or take a look at our stairlift battery care guide to find out how to get the most out of your stair lift battery.
