If you require a stairlift, you’re likely wondering how much they cost to run. Stairlifts provide a safe and efficient way to make climbing the stairs much easier, but many individuals have to factor in buying the device and keeping it running year-round on top of other electrical appliances.
To learn more about how much it costs to run a stairlift, the amount of energy it uses, and tips to keep costs low, continue reading.
How Does a Stairlift Work?
Stairlifts operate using three basic components, including a track, motor, and battery. When all key components work together, your stairlift can operate efficiently.
The device travels up and down the tracks using battery power while you’re sitting on the seat, strapped in with a safety belt. Additional features, such as obstruction sensors, further enhance your safety, alerting you when something is in the way of your stairlift.
Do Stairlifts Run on Batteries?
Modern stairlifts typically run on a battery, which is charged from your mains. Depending on usage, your stairlift battery should last between three and five years. If you’re going to use your stairlift a lot, it’s best to charge it regularly to ensure it continues working – especially through power cuts.
However, if you only need to use your stairlift on occasion, less frequent charging should be fine. You’ll know if your stairlift needs charging or replacing if it slows down or won’t work. In other cases where your stairlift doesn’t travel as quickly or stops working entirely, you’ll likely need a battery replacement.
Can You Use a Stairlift in a Powercut?
Stairlifts are mostly battery-operated, which means you can use them during a power cut. If charged correctly, your stairlift should be able to operate during a power outage – but if your battery needs charging, most stairlifts come with a battery backup.
This means that emergency trips up and down your stairs can be made, even when there’s no electricity in your house. If you’re worried about how long your power cut may last, we advise switching off the power switch every time you’re finished using your stairlift.
How Much Energy Does a Stairlift Use?
The amount of energy your stairlift uses depends on the model:
- Straight stairlifts – 0.024 and 0.33 kWh
- Curved stairlifts – 0.03 and 0.5 kWh
Curved stairlifts use more energy than straight stairlifts due to having longer tracks, more turns, and half-landings. However, if you do require a curved stairlift, don’t worry too much. There’s not a huge difference energy-wise, and compared to most household appliances, these numbers are considered low.
How Much Does it Cost to Run a Stairlift in 2026?
According to Ofgem (energy regulator for Great Britain), the energy price cap per unit and standing charge between 1 April and 30 June 2026 is 24.67 pence per kWh.
So, how much does it cost to run a stairlift? It will cost you around 7p per day, which equates to roughly £10-£30 per year for typical stairlift use based on 10 trips per day at 24.67p per kWh, operating at the lower end (0.024–0.03 kWh).
Cost to Run a Stairlift Compared to Other Appliances
The surprisingly cheap cost of running stairlifts is due to the technology they use, which makes them very energy efficient – but what do they cost compared to other appliances?
| Appliance | Cost (estimate) |
| Stairlift (straight and curved) | £30 average |
| Washing machine | £60 average |
| Dishwasher | £60 average |
| Tumble dryer (heat pump) | £50 average |
Please note that these figures are rough estimates based on average energy usage, and they will likely vary. As you can see, stairlifts are significantly cheaper to run each year compared to most common household appliances.
To keep the costs of running a stairlift as low as possible, we recommend regularly switching off your stairlift when it’s not in use and fully charged to prevent higher energy bills.
