Hinged rails for your stairlift

If you’ve got a doorway or passageway at the foot of your staircase, you need a hinged rail stairlift.

Hinged rails help to prevent the stairlift track from becoming a tripping hazard.  When raised, the rail no longer crosses open passages or doorways, leaving the area obstacle-free.

Manual hinge rails are lifted or lowered by hand. Designed to make this as easy as possible for users, you still need to bend down to take the track in and out. Powered hinge rails unfold and store themselves away automatically. All you need to do is pull the toggle and your track will do the rest. There are two different finishes of stairlift track, as illustrated below. Compare our images to your staircase at home. This way you can see if you’re likely to need a hinged rail or not.

Hinged Rail Stairlift Options

Our hinged rail images below are for a right-handed installation.

Option 1

If you have a standard staircase with at least 12 inches clearance from doorway/passage…

NO HINGE IS REQUIRED

Option 2

If the stairlift track will finish on the floor and it would cause a tripping hazard across either a doorway or passage way…

A HINGE RAIL IS REQUIRED

Need a hinged track?

If you have a clearance of less than 12 inches or 300mm (E to F)  you need a hinged rail.

If you have an obstruction (e.g. a radiator or cupboard), the minimum distance required is 26 inches or 650mm. So you have plenty of space to park the stairlift at the bottom.

When you place an order, a qualified stairlift engineer from Halton Stairlifts will call to check the suitability for installation.

Read our helpful Halton Stairlifts guide to help you find out just how much space does a stairlift take?. From using our stairlift measuring guide to deciding whether you need a hinged rail or not, we’ve got handy tips to help you get started.
